Metallization is a process that involves several processes including coating, metallizing, thermal spraying, vacuum metallizing, vacuum deposition, and metalation. Coating is where the surface of an object is covered to help in enhancing appearance, adhesion, reducing corrosion and scratches and wear. Treatment, coating and combination of an object with a metal are among the processes involved in metallizing. Thermal metallization involves where a heated substance is sprayed on the surface of another substance. A process, where organometallic compound which are metals having carbon atoms are reacted with organic compounds, is referred to as metalation. Vacuum deposition involves all processes used in placing a very thin layer of a substance on the object in a vacuum. Vacuum metalizing is the process of coating an object with a metal where the process takes place in a vacuum chamber.
Vacuum metalizing process is carried out in a vacuum chamber where the metal used in the coating is heated to its boiling point where the metal forms vapour. The vaporized metal is then allowed to condense while settling on the surface of the object to be coated. Heating and vaporization of the metal uses heat generated in various processes including resistance heating and electron beam. Resistance heating involves passing an electric current through the metal where the current experiences resistance hence heats the metal. Heating the metal using electron beams involves using cathode rays which emit negative electrodes in a vacuum tube producing heat. Vacuum metallization of objects is used to decorate the objects, protect the object from wear and tear and also to enhance the functions of that object such as increasing the conductivity of poor electrical conductor materials.
Benefits of vacuum metalizing are immeasurable. Vacuum metalizing has little or no health effects on the users and it produces a uniform layer of polish on the surface of an object. Some substances and metals used in the vacuum metallizing process are highly hazardous to human health hence users are protected from coming into contact with them. Durable metals and other objects that last for a long period are also produced by vacuum metallizing where they cannot contact air and moisture which results into metal rusting. Vacuum metalizing is also an environmentally friendly process reducing the amount of carbon released into the atmosphere.
During the process of vacuum metallization, it is important to take precaution measures that may damage the object during the process making it lose value in the market. Some damages likely to be encountered on the objects during the vacuum metalizing process include the objects having burned parts which lack the shiny color, the coating may be too thin making the object have distinct colors like green appearing and the objects might also be showing rainbow colors.
